The bEverly Sisters
On Thursday, 4/12, I managed to convince my friends Carrie & Ashley to come to Detroit with me, last minute, to check out Jeffrey William Thomas' (Gardens) band, the bEverly Sisters, for free. Cliff Bell's is a classy jazz club, which created a different atmosphere from the dark, rock and roll venues I'm used to. Playing some Everly Brothers covers and some original songs, these three talented musicians put on a performance unlike anything I'd seen before. The lyrics that stuck with me most were "kiss every inch of my shadow." Love that. Everything they sang was very passionate and sweet; definitely glad I didn't miss out on this show.

Me with The Crooks
The following Saturday, my dad and I headed out to Ferndale for "Rock and Roll Tacos" at The Loving Touch. Live music and tacos made by Timmy Vulgar: what a great concept! I'd been wanting to see The Crooks for a while, so the fact that they were the opening band made the night even better. These kids (which I can say because I'm older than them) are crazy good; I had just heard their CD in full for the first time, and still can't believe that they were only 16ish when it was recorded. They have two shows coming up this weekend in Chesterfield & Hamtramck, which I highly recommend attending if you can. Check out our calendar for more details. The Crooks are a really nice group of guys with a great sense of humor, if you couldn't tell from our picture above. There was a crotch rocket parked nearby, and we HAD to pose with it.

Me, Art Alexakis, Hollie
Not really "Detroit Music Live" related, but just a few hours ago, on a whim, I joined my friends Hollie, Ashley, & Carrie at the Hard Rock Cafe in Detroit to see Art Alexakis from Everclear perform. I'm not a big Everclear fan or anything, but he was pretty good and, surprisingly, really funny and personal with the audience. He mostly played their more popular songs, so I wasn't completely lost. And even he didn't seem to know the lyrics to his more obscure songs, which would've been disappointing if he hadn't had such a postitive attitude and made jokes about it himself. One other good thing that came from my impulsive decision to see Art was my introduction to one of the opening bands, Tone and Niche. They're a local group and are currently competing to win a spot opening for Bruce Springsteen at the Hard Rock Calling in London. You can vote for them here.
