Managing a full load of classes at two different schools while working and still trying to get out as much as possible to support my friends' music careers is hard. Obviously I haven't had time to write about it, but I'm still an active concert-goer. Here's a brief overview of what I've done since I last posted:

DECEMBER 28, 2012
The Sights had a "Last Waltz" style review, featuring all sorts of great musicians. Basically, the guest musician chose a couple of songs of their own, The Sights', or another band that they wanted to perform, and The Sights provided backup. Definitely a different type of show. It was really cool seeing almost everyone I know up on stage at one point or another.

Cliff Bell's hosted an awesome little show on a Sunday night. Jarrod Champion and Danny Kroha both did a solo set, and then The Marble Fauns rounded out the night with a soulful performance that they ended up taking outside during their last song.

My friend Chelsee came out with me for a double-header: Danny Kroha and Dave Morrison at Lo & Behold: Records & Books for Folk Blues Night, which has now become a monthly event, and Danny Kroha, Julian Paaige, and Eddie Baranek doing a round of solo performances before Outrageous Cherry's set.

I saw Go Tiger, Go! for the first time in a long time at Simon's After Dark in Allen Park. Because of their solid new lineup and sound and after a lunch date with lead singer Paul Corsi, I'm now kind of sort of managing them. :) I haven't had a ton of time to work on it yet because of school, but just wait for this summer. You're going to be seeing a lot more of Go Tiger, Go!

JANUARY 16 & 17, 2013 Fake Surfers & Growwing Pains both played at PJ's Lager House on the 16th. Eroders played at the Garden Bowl on the 17th. These three bands are paragons of the punk scene in Detroit. |

My friends Richard, Elisa, and Steven joined me for a night of Dixieland jazz and experimental music.
We first caught part of Detroit Pleasure Society's set at Trinosophes and then went to Wasabi Dream's first performance at PJ's Lager House.

Go Tiger, Go! had another performance at Simon's After Dark in Allen Park with The HandGrenades. I designed some posters to sell along with their other merch: their new CD, buttons, and t-shirts.
After they played, I drove out to Detroit to hang out with Richie Wohlfeil while he spun some records at Rodin.

I spent Valentine's Day with my true loves, Electric Six. After Dark Amusement Park and Andy D opened the show and made the night one I'll never forget.
The crowd of apparently single college aged guys were fairly rowdy near the end of E6's set, but nobody forces me out of my front and center spot when I'm seeing my favorite band.

My friend Amber and I went to The Loving Touch in Ferndale to see/hear Lt.baD DJ and perform. I don't have any pictures from it, but it was an experience worth mentioning. You can listen to some of their stuff here.

Detroit Pleasure Society had their CD release at PJ's Lager House. I missed their first set, but that just meant that they were all loosened up and ready to go during their second.

FEBRUARY 23, 2013 My much anticipated birthday concert. Don Duprie, The Cheetahs, and Danny and the Darleans were all nice enough to get together to play for a show that I set up at Lo & Behold!: Records & Books. Much love to everyone who came out, and an extra special thanks to Richie Wohlfeil and Danny Kroha for helping me get things all set up and for pretty much being the best guys I know. |

Wasabi Dream had their second performance at North End Studios for the First Annual Ambient Battle. They improvised a song which you can listen to here.

I drove out to Woodruff's in Ypsilanti to see part of The Sights' set before heading back to PJ's Lager House to see The Platinum Selection (previously The Crooks). It was my first time seeing this new version of their band. Still just as great as ever. Listen here.

The Sights played again at The Loving Touch in Ferndale. I stopped by there and then caught Danny and the Darleans at Donovan's in Detroit.

GOLD came up from Toledo for a show at Woodruff's in Ypsilanti. The other band was a no show, so the guys had the stage to themselves. My friend Liz and I had a great time hanging out with them all night.

Liz and I met up at the Garden Bowl in Detroit to get some vegan pizza and see French Method, PALACES, and Jacco Gardner. Jacco and his band are from the Netherlands and had just gotten back from SXSW. Love their psychedelic baroque pop sound.

My friend Jake and I took a road trip to Grand Rapids to see Mark Mallman and Electric Six at The Intersection. The guys had been on tour across the US for over a month so it was great seeing them again. :)

MARCH 27, 2013 Liz, who always comes with me to support our friends from Ohio, joined me once again at Mickey Finn's in Toledo to see Silent Lions. They premiered their new music video for "Terrible Days," which I uploaded so you can watch it. It's creepy and haunting and I love it. | |

I finally saw The Barrel Brothers Street Band at a benefit at the Hard Rock Cafe in Detroit, and then headed over to Elijah's House of Dirt in Hamtramck to see The Vonneguts and The Platinum Selection. I got there late and it was packed with young people, dancing and completely into the music. It was an experience like no other. I can't wait for the next show there.

After working all morning and spending some time with our families on Easter, my friend Amber and I wound down with Deadbeat Beat at PJ's Lager House in Detroit.

John Sinclair, former manager of the MC5, spoke at the University of Michigan - Dearborn. My professor and I heard about it last minute and she decided that, since he is a poet, we would go see him speak instead of having class.

Wolfman Band, The GO, and Red Kross played at PJ's Lager House in Detroit. Just like the King Tuff show back in October, it was packed. I ended up sitting on the front corner of the stage again, my favorite spot. Too much greatness for one show.

I had had every intention of going to four shows in one night, but there were some miscommunications and, long story short, I only made it out to two. I wasn't disappointed, though, because the two I did see were phenomenal. I stopped by Folk Blues Night first at Lo & Behold! Records & Books in Hamtramck and then drove down the street to The New Dodge Lounge to see The Octopus for the first time.

So that's where I've been for the past couple of months. Recommendations for the next couple of weeks? Wasabi Dream is playing at The Old Miami this Friday, April 19, with Dark Red. Saturday, April 20, is Record Store Day, so there are a number of awesome shows going on, including Detroit X Detroit at the Magic Stick and Timmy's Organism and The Hentchmen at UHF in Royal Oak. And then, of course, The Metro Times Blowout begins its two weekend showcase on April 25th. Hope to see you around. :)
